FAQ

Q:Does debate help with my college application?
A:Public Forum Debate helps develop multiple skills such as critical thinking, research, and public speaking; these help debaters stand out in college applications, which is why many of our past debaters were admitted to top world universities.
Q:How do I register for the city round and when is the deadline?
A:Registration can be done entirely online. Find the "Challenge Information" page, click the registration link, fill out the form and pay as instructed. Usually, registration closes one week before the city round begins.
Q:Can I participate in Shanghai as a Beijing student? Can I attend multiple city rounds in one season?
A:All city rounds are open to students from any region. We find that the more rounds students attend, the faster they progress. We encourage students to join multiple city rounds in a single season.
Q:Does NHSDLC provide accommodation and meals if I go to another city?
A:NHSDLC does not provide them, but we will provide recommended accommodation info nearby via email one week before the round starts.
Q: How to choose a debate partner? Can I change partners?
A:We encourage teaming up with school debate club members for easier preparation. If you don't have one temporarily, you can register individually, and our staff will contact you to help find a partner.
Q:What is the motion and when/where is it released?
A:A new motion is released each semester. For the National Championship, a new motion is used. It is announced on the official website and WeChat official account one month before the season starts.
Q:Where can I find more debate materials?
A:Sample cases and research packets are released shortly after the motion is announced. Additional training opportunities like partner school training and overseas programs are also available.
Q:It's my first time, what if I meet experienced debaters?
A:The first two rounds of group matches are randomized, but the later rounds are paired by "power-matching"—meaning opponents usually have a similar win-loss record and skill level.
Q:Our opponents haven't shown up 15 minutes after the new pairings. Do we win by default?
A:○If staff cannot contact them after 15 minutes past the start time, they may be disqualified, though staff reserve final discretion. Please contact our staff first, and we will try to arrange another opponent.
Q:How is advancement calculated?
A:Teams with 3+ wins in group matches advance to elimination rounds ("breaking"), and in some cases teams with 2 wins. Results will be posted on the website by 10 PM on the first day, and staff will also call advancing teams.
Q:When and how can I view the judge ballots?
A:During preliminary rounds, PS (Public Speaking) judges are not permitted to provide any verbal feedback or disclose results. For other event types (including JWSD, PF, LD, and BP), judges will provide brief verbal feedback on-site or announce the results for that specific round.
Additionally, for all event types, judge ballots from the preliminary rounds will be uploaded to the official NHSDLC Baidu Cloud by 10:00 PM on Day 1 of the City Round. For each City Round, a link will be posted on our official website; students can click the link to view their ballots.
Q:How is the national ranking calculated? Does changing partners affect it?
A:Points are awarded for participating in city or championship rounds, summing up to the national ranking. It is an individual ranking, so changing partners does not affect it.
Q:How to qualify for the National Championship?
A:Teams advancing to elimination rounds in city rounds qualify. If not, camp members or member school recommended teams can apply and be reviewed/selected.
Q:Why did I lose despite better English and preparation?
A:Debates are decided by argument quality and persuasiveness to the general public. Sometimes knowledge isn't effectively conveyed, or a team proves their point but fails to prove it matters more than the opponent's. Thus, experienced debaters can still lose.
Q:I hit a plateau making top 4 but not finals. How to improve?
A:An experienced private debate coach can help identify your specific issues and create a personalized plan to help you progress faster.
Q:How to start a debate club?
A:Contact us for guidance. Note that you don't need tedious preparation—just grab a few friends and a quiet place to practice together.
Q:How to get more resources for an existing club?
A:Register as a member school to get free training resources, including the "NHSDLC Official Textbook" for structured learning.
Q:Are city round judges certified?
A:The committee recruits from diverse academic/business fields, tests their English, and provides rigorous pre-challenge training to ensure quality.
Q:How to appeal if unsatisfied with results?
A:You can communicate with staff regarding operational rules, but debaters cannot enter the scoring room to ensure fairness. Staff will talk outside. For unresolved issues, contact the city consultant at the bottom or email dlc@seedasdan.org within 5 working days.
